Tokyo

We arrived last night to a very wet Tokyo and some uncertainty about how to get to the hotel. There were no taxis in sight so I walked out alone until I found the hotel and then called one from there to go back to the station and pick up the luggage. The taxi driver thought I had come from Tokyo station when in fact we had taken the underground out to the Ginza station. He was very upset when he realised the mistake, but it was no big deal as the distance above ground was only about 2km.

Confusion on the way to Mt Fuji

We had a plan - catch the bus to the other side of Mt Fuji and see the view from there. It all started well with another train ride to Kowaguchiko; then on to the bus for lake Saiko.

Along the way the clouds parted for a few minutes and Fuji pierced the heavens before us. It was an amazing sight and had our hopes high.

Mt Fuji san

This morning we caught the train to Kowaguchiko and then transferred to the bus for Mt Fuji. Typicall for Japan, the ticket booths at Kowaguchiko Station each specialised in their own thing and would not share information they knew about the timetable of the others. There is a tourist information shop just outside the station that had helpful staff who spoke some English. It seems that climbing on Fuji might be limited to as much as 2 months of the year (3 at most) so we are really pleased we arrived in one of them. I suggest you check this out if you hope to climb as we did.

Miyajima

We caught the train down to Miyajima-guchi station and then straight on to the JR Ferry across to the Island. We were going to hire bikes, but they only offered short-term rates and it was a bit expensive for a full day on that basis. So, we walked.

Nagasaki The 26 Martyrs

Yesterday we walked from the hotel to the nearby church which is the site of the 26 Martyrs Of Japan. On February 5, 1597, 6 foreign missionaries and 20 Japanese Christians were crucified here. A monument to these events was built in 1962. Nearby is the local Catholic Church and Mass was being held.
